Are Carbon Fiber Rings Waterproof?
on Dec 29 2022
This is a very common question we get asked a lot.
Luckily it’s a pretty simple answer, but it does require some context.
At a glance:
All of Element Ring Co’s pure carbon fiber rings are waterproof. But we can’t speak for every other carbon fiber ring on the market.
Ultimately, whether or not a carbon fiber ring is waterproof comes down to several factors. Where is the carbon fiber sourced, how is it handled, and what other materials are paired with it.
Waterproof vs. Water Resistant
There's a pretty big difference between something being waterproof and water resistant
Waterproof
Waterproof means the object is literally impermeable to water. The object is fully water tight and cannot be damaged by water alone.
Water Resistant
In contrast, Water Resistant simply means the object is less likely to be damaged by water. However, it may still be damaged over prolonged exposure to water.
A great example of a water resistant object you likely use each day is your phone. Many modern phones advertise various water resistance ratings. Most of the time you can feel fine about getting a splash on it at the sink. But that doesn't mean to toss your phone in a pool.
Carbon Fiber and Waterproofing
Generally speaking, Carbon Fiber is a very water resistant material.
in a nutshell, carbon fiber is made up of thousands of individual carbon strands. The strands are impregnated with a binding agent, then woven together, and hardened.
These carbon strands themselves are unlikely to be bothered by water, but it's a different story for the binder.
Most commonly, an epoxy of some kind is used to bind the carbon fiber weave together. Generally speaking, epoxy should be water resistant at the least.
Ultimately it comes down to the type of epoxy in the carbon fiber. What is the quality of that epoxy? What is the epoxy overall composed of?
That being said, our carbon fiber uses a very high quality epoxy blend.
Our Carbon Fiber Rings Are Waterproof
As for others, you’ll have to do some extra digging to ensure its waterproofness. But generally speaking, any pure carbon fiber ring worth its salt should at the very least be water resistant.
Other Materials Can Complicate Things
Carbon Fiber is known for its strength and durability, and we often leverage that to strengthen weaker materials in our rings. Materials like wood or resin.
The question then, is how waterproof are those materials?
In our case, we do not propose that our wood + carbon fiber rings are Waterproof.
While our pure carbon fiber rings are indeed waterproof, our wood + carbon fiber rings are very much Water Resistant.
While the carbon fiber in these rings will certainly hold up to water, the wood is a different story. We do treat and stabilize all of our wood, making it much more durable than regular untreated wood. But prolonged exposure to water can still eventually harm the wood over time.
This can ultimately vary from material to material. When available, you should always check whether an individual ring is waterproof or not.
Our experience with Carbon Fiber Rings and Water
We’ve been building rings with carbon fiber since 2012. In fact, carbon fiber was the very first material we began to work with! Our carbon fiber rings hold up very well to water. Our carbon fiber rings have been worn in pools, hot tubs, lakes, you name it, and never had a problem.
Carbon fiber rings from other brands may not hold up as well, but our quality speaks for itself.
Check out our carbon fiber ring collection for a large selection of waterproof carbon fiber rings. Just remember, only our pure carbon fiber rings are fully waterproof.

Wood Rings
Unlike other metal or stone types, wood is an organic material and is a potent symbol of life, growth, and strength. Any piece of wood used in the construction of the ring went through a life cycle. I had to grow vital from the seed to the tree, and this metamorphosis refers to people extraordinarily.
The growth of a tree and the strength it needs to survive is a powerful metaphor for relationships. Couples have to be strong to resist the passage of time, and together, two people who love and respect each other can grow more than you could ever do if they were alone. Marriage is a step forward, genuinely unique. Many couples choose to pledge their mutual love with wooden rings to sign that their love is destined to continue to grow healthy and always aim to develop strength in their relationship.
You can almost think of a tree as a real-time capsule. Wood captures the essence of his own life, year after year, growing stronger and stronger as time passes.
Carbon Fiber Rings
Carbon fiber is a very lightweight, durable material made from organic polymers. Carbon fiber webs or weddings can be made entirely of carbon fiber or used as an inlay in the ring. Our carbon fiber rings are fashionable and unique.
Carbon fiber rings use authentic, solid carbon fiber, unlike most carbon fiber rings with an imitation product. While they may look nice, these false carbon fiber rings have no strength, durability, and legitimate carbon fiber integrity. That is why we manufacture the rings ourselves, making sure they are of the highest quality.
The raw material used to make the carbon fiber is a mixture of compounds; its most organic polymers carbon ring.
This material was extracted in long strands or fibers and then heated in a controlled environment. The heat causes the atoms in the threads to vibrate violently until most of the particles that are not carbon are expelled. The material left after the heating process is composed of fine carbon filaments, the wound, which is then processed through stabilization, spinning, and weaving. Carbon fiber is cut from a concrete tube without stitching and incrustations in 3- pieces to create an authentic look and feel. Carbon fiber inlays are lightweight, healthy, and durable.
Carbon fiber can be embedded in a variety of rings making the ring lighter and more sturdy.
Glow rings
Glow rings are totally out of this world! The dark circles' unique glow has an incredible attraction, unlike any traditional ring you will find. The luminescent material is applied to the outside and sometimes inside these rings that glow in the dark, fed by exposure to light.
Glow rings are made from a mixture of resin and phosphor powder filament. The glow will remain visible for several hours after you have loaded. The ring is charged whenever exposed to any light source, including the light of the day.
The brightness is strontium aluminate powder, a natural crystal that illuminates after being charged by UV light. Nontoxic and shines brighter and more prolonged than copper activated zinc sulfide, one of its most popular competitors.
The brightness can be loaded in two ways. The first and fastest is to use a strong flashlight UV. The ring can also be charged with the light of the sun though it takes a little longer.
Glow times depend on several factors. The first factor is the load. If long accused sunlight or strong light UV, the ring will glow for several minutes and have a glow that lasts a few hours. The ring is rechargeable for at least ten years.
Personalized Rings
Custom engagement rings are a popular alternative to prefabricated designs. Personalized rings can be designed to reflect the couple's personality and symbolize the special relationship they share. There are many ways to customize an engagement ring, simple design options to develop, and unique options.

Bentwood Rings Vs. Solid Wood Rings (& Carbon Fiber of Course)
on Oct 09 2018
We've scrapped our old build style and we want to tell you why.
As of Fall 2018 we have now fully committed to building all of our wood & carbon fiber rings in a way yielding rings with greater durability, a more natural look and ultimately a longer lasting ring than ever before. This method is sometimes referred to as "Solid Wood" or "All Wood" and it is a stark departure from the "Bentwood" style of ring making.
Building rings in this manner takes more time, more equipment and just as much attention to detail. Bentwood rings are made by soaking wood veneer and wrapping the thin sheets of wood around a form. In our case this was a carbon fiber ring. Using glue, and finger pressure this is then bonded together oftentimes showing off the overlap where the veneer terminates. Artists can be crafty at hiding this in a ring but sometimes due to wood grain mismatch, it just isn't possible to hide. Furthermore, the glue used in this process is not very durable. Although it is beautiful for the first few weeks, maybe months, we have found they do not last much beyond a year or two.
Enter our newly adopted and recently honed craft of all wood ring construction! For this method of ring making we take solid blocks of wood and in a process of oven baking & vacuum infusion of stabilizing resin we are able to make wood blanks that exhibit far greater durability than their original self's. These blanks then get machined to spec, then fitted to the carbon fiber ring on which or in which the design is intended. The final touch (or multiple touches) is to finish off the shaping and a final application of linseed / orange or other natural oils to the wood.
We prefer and build our wood rings with a carbon fiber liner or shell for exponentially greater strength and longevity.
As for continued care of our "solid wood" rings, we suggest you limit water exposure. We also understand however that is wildly impossible to do this all the time and so we further recommend you oil your ring every so often based upon its appearance though technically this should not be necessary as the infusion process mentioned above all but seals off most of the wood grains pores. It is important to note that although these rings are far greater in our opinion than bentwood made rings, they are still made of natural wood which is not known to be the most durable of natural materials. Luckily however it is one of the most beautiful and we feel we do a pretty damn good job of capturing that.
